Sunglasses are needed not only in summer, but also in other seasons. Yulia Levchenko, associate professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at Krasnoyarsk State Medical University, spoke about this.
According to the specialist, eye protection is especially important for the Krasnoyarsk Territory in winter and spring. Snow reflects the sun's rays, so ultraviolet radiation affects the eyes not only from above, but also from below. In the spring, when residents of the region go outdoors more often, the number of calls with signs of “snow blindness” increases 2.3 times compared to the summer months.
Children and adolescents, people after eye surgery, patients with diseases of the cornea or retina, drivers, athletes and those who spend more than two hours on the street should be especially attentive to eye protection. When choosing glasses, the doctor advises looking not at the design and degree of darkness, but at the markings. The temple or insert must be marked UV400 or indicate 99, 100% UV protection.
Fake or no-name sunglasses can be more dangerous than no sunglasses, according to an ophthalmologist. They darken the image, the pupil dilates, and even more ultraviolet radiation enters the eye. You can check your glasses at home using a UV flashlight. If the light through the lens continues to brightly illuminate the security mark on the banknote or document, then there is no security. High-quality lenses marked UV400 should extinguish the glow.
For everyday wear, the expert recommends glasses with UV protection and polarization. A UV filter protects your eyes from dangerous radiation, and polarization removes glare from snow, water, glass and the road. For the city and bright weather in Siberia, glasses with the second or third darkening category are suitable.
The doctor called gray, green and brown lenses the most versatile. Ophthalmologists do not recommend blue and cyan lenses, as they filter ultraviolet radiation worse and put more strain on vision.
