Prokop Perezimny, Road Destroyer
On this day they remember the Monk Procopius Dekapolit, a confessor who lived in the 8th century.
As a rule, real spring came to Prokop, the snow melted, winter roads ceased to exist. People said: “Prokop Zimny will dig a road, but Prokop Perezimny will destroy it”; “The dug destroys the road, but he himself gets stuck in a snowdrift”; “The snow lay and lay on Procopius, and then ran away into the river.” Therefore, before leaving the yard, we listened to the road to see if it was reliable. They also listened to the drop: if it was abundant, it was better not to go on a long journey.
But if there was a good drop of water, it was possible to go into the forest to hunt hares. Hunters, by the way, had their own signs: if a hare crosses the road, it means failure, and if a dog does the same, there will be no trouble, but also great success.
The peasants watched the willow. If its buds begin to bloom from the crown, then it is better to start sowing early. But if the willow on the top of the head is in no hurry to fluff up, then the second sowing will be good. They also waited for snowdrops: as soon as they appeared, it meant that it was time to start plowing.
