Correspondents' dinner at the White House, resumed after the attempted armed attack in April. Trump: “We can't let crazy people change our way of life”

US President Donald Trump has announced that he has accepted the invitation to attend the annual press gala in Washington, rescheduled for July 24 after the April dinner was interrupted due to an attempted intrusion by an armed man, reports AFP, taken over by Agerpres.

The organization of this new dinner by the White House Correspondents' Association “is very good news, because we can't let crazy people change our way of life,” the American president wrote on his Truth Social network.

He finds it “interesting” that the gala will be held at the Waldorf Astoria, a luxury hotel that has long been part of his real estate empire.

Enhanced security measures

Earlier, the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) announced that the annual press gala in Washington, which was interrupted in late April by an armed attack, has been rescheduled for July 24.

On April 25, the dinner was interrupted when an armed man, now accused of attempting to assassinate the US president, tried to force his way into the room.

The president of the White House Correspondents' Association indicated in a statement that the July gala will be “more intimate” and that security will be “significantly increased”.

“This rescheduling was not automatic,” added Weijia Jiang, who works for CBS. “It was a decision that WHCA leaders made after careful consideration and taking into account the views of our members,” she added.

“We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word, especially in this year when our country celebrates its 250th anniversary,” she added.

The attacker is charged with four crimes

The attacker, Cole Allen, 31, is indicted on four counts, including attempted assassination of the President of the United States and assaulting a federal agent with a deadly weapon. He pleaded not guilty.

On April 25, he tried to breach the security system at the entrance to the ballroom of a hotel where the annual WHCA gala, an event attended by Donald Trump, was taking place.

Shots were fired, disrupting the annual dinner for Washington's political and media elite, whose hundreds of guests in tuxedos and evening gowns were forced to stretch out on the floor between tables in the hotel's vast ballroom.
