Former coach of Shakhtar and Dynamo Mircea Lucescu has died


He was 80 years old. Lucescu's family quickly gathered in Bucharest and were with him in his last moments, the report said.

Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 when he lost consciousness during a Romanian national team training session at a training camp in Mogosoaia. Ambulance doctors recorded an irregular heart rhythm and took him to a Bucharest hospital, where doctors confirmed that there was no heart attack.

Lucescu was scheduled to be discharged on April 3, but he suffered a heart attack. On the night of April 5, the arrhythmias became so severe that they did not respond to treatment. Romanian journalist Emmanual Rosu reported on the social network X that Lucescu was put into an artificial coma.

Context

Lucescu has led Dynamo Kiev since 2020. Before that, he worked for Shakhtar Donetsk (2004–2016), Dynamo's main rival in national tournaments. After leaving the Donetsk club, Lucescu headed the Russian Zenit and the Turkish national team for two seasons.

After Lucescu's appointment as head coach of Dynamo, the team received all three national trophies: Ukrainian Super Cup, UPL championship, Ukrainian Cup. In the UPL championship of the 2022/2023 season, Dynamo under the leadership of Lucescu were left without medals, finishing fourth.

Lucescu announced his departure from Dynamo during a press conference after the Kiev team lost the match with Shakhtar (0:1) on November 3, 2023.
