“An evening general education school for collective farmers has opened in the village of Valdgeim, Birobidzhan district.”

From a note by the chairman of the “Furniture Maker” artel, Kh. Chernobrod:

“The resolution of the Party Central Committee on the convening of the 18th Party Congress inspired our entire team and mobilized it to fight for the early fulfillment of production tasks, for high standards of labor productivity. Pre-congress competition unfolded in the workshops. The artel team committed itself to fulfilling the quarterly program ahead of the opening day of the congress.”

Director of the Tunguska timber mill E. Kats notes:

“Workers of the Tunguska timber plant in the Smidovichi district, preparing for the 18th Party Congress, are showing examples of Stakhanov’s work. A team of workers in the furniture workshop under the leadership of Stakhanovite master comrade Kulikov is preparing greenhouse frames. According to the plan, 3 thousand frames need to be produced by March 1. To commemorate the congress, the team has pledged to provide 4.2 thousand frames. The carpenters fulfill their obligations with honor. The work teams complete the daily task at 180-200 percent. Instead of eight frames per day, according to the norm, carpenters Kulikov, Chernev, Maltsev produce 14-15 frames.

The third brigade of the small production workshop, having discussed the theses of the report of Comrade. Molotov on the third five-year plan for the development of the national economy of the USSR, pledged to give 110% of the plan and challenged other brigades to socialist competition. The third brigade exceeds its obligations and delivers 118% of the norm every day, and 159% of the plan for riveting fish containers. Our workers are practically carrying out the instructions of Comrade Stalin that it is necessary to keep all our people in a state of mobilization readiness. 24 people passed the standards for the PVHO badge. In recent days, six people have become Voroshilov shooters. 27 members of the plant’s fire brigade passed the GSO standards.”

A blessing was received for the construction of the Church of St. Nicholas in Birobidzhan. The construction of the temple was carried out by Birobidzhanstroy OJSC. The temple was built over two years using funds from parishioners and private donations. With the support of the capital’s government, Moscow “Zil” did a kind of unique work; from them the temple received 5 domes and 8 bells as a gift.

The opening of the temple was timed to coincide with the day of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra, wonderworker.

The first wooden church with a bell tower, built in the region according to Orthodox canons, was consecrated by Bishop Mark of Khabarovsk and Amur in December 1999, on the day of the patronal feast.

Until 2005, the temple was the cathedral of the Birobidzhan diocese. (In September 2005, the Annunciation Cathedral was built.)
