Folk calendar
Vasily Teply, Vasily Parnik, Vasily Kapelnik, Vasily Solnechnik
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Hieromartyr Vasily of Ancyra, who lived in the 4th century.
Among the people, Vasily received many nicknames, and all of them are associated with the onset of warm and sunny days. The drops are already pattering with might and main, and people used to say that: “Vasily Kapelnik is sick of winter.” If someone was going to build a new house or barn or bathhouse, then they had to look at where the drops were falling from the roofs and where the streams were flowing. No buildings were erected in such places. It was believed that here was a “trodden path of water to the depths of the earth,” and the house would not stand firmly.
It was customary to tell fortunes about Vasily by the sun. If it sprouts in red circles, it promises a good harvest. They also watched the sky: blue clouds in it foreshadowed warmth and rain. There were other signs: for example, the melting of snow on the northern side of the anthill promised a warm and long summer.
Housewives baked rolls on this day, symbolizing the sun. It is not difficult to prepare such a delicacy today. You need to take 200 g of butter, one egg, one yolk, two tablespoons of yeast, nine tablespoons of milk and two tablespoons of sugar, mix everything and replace with flour so that the dough does not stick to the table. Make balls from this dough, sprinkle them with raisins, place them on a baking sheet and let them rise, and then brush them with beaten egg and bake.
