Russians began to save more / Economic news of Krasnoyarsk and the Krasnoyarsk Territory / Newslab.Ru

3 April 20:20

For the first time, the Bank of Russia began publishing the quarterly household savings rate. This is an indicator of what part of the income the population does not spend immediately, but saves.

According to the regulator, in the fourth quarter of 2025 the savings rate was 16%, taking into account seasonal adjustments. Without such an adjustment, the figure reached 22.9%.

The main contribution to the growth of savings now comes from bank deposits. Against the backdrop of a high key rate, the population preferred to save funds on deposits rather than spend them. Today, with a key rate of 15%, this instrument still remains a priority for savings.

The main innovation is that now the data will be released quarterly. Previously, in Russia this indicator was available only on an annual basis and with a noticeable delay, but now the Central Bank offers a more rapid assessment of household behavior.

According to experts, in the next five years we can expect stable dynamics of population income growth at the level of 3–4%. While maintaining the attractiveness of financial products, this will keep the savings rate at 10–15%. If yields drop to 10%, consumption will likely start to rise. The development of new financial instruments – IIS, DFA and others – will make it possible to receive decent returns even if the key rate is reduced to 10-12%. The interlocutor is sure that the digitalization of banking and investment services, Internet accounts, and mobile applications will contribute to the growth of “micro-savings” and savings accounts.

Changes in tax policy, such as the introduction of differentiated rates, can reduce the return on savings. If bank profitability continues to decline, the savings instrument itself will become less attractive. On the other hand, simplifying processes by updating the taxpayer’s personal account will help people save time and reduce the volume of reporting documents.
