The Bank of Sweden, the country's central bank, recommended on Wednesday that households have 1,000 kroner (approx. 93 euros) in cash per adult due to the uncertain situation in the world. Sweden is one of the most digital countries.

The recommendation encourages the use of banknotes and coins to maintain the money circulation system. Another recommendation is to have bank cards from different banks in your family and have access to other digital payment methods.
In Sweden, 90 percent transactions in stores are cashless.
The Bank of Sweden was working on introducing e-money, but these plans were suspended after Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine in 2022, when the importance of traditional money increased. Then many Swedes went to ATMs to withdraw banknotes.
In Sweden, many stores only accept cards or mobile payments. The Swedish government is preparing a law requiring some important service points for society, e.g. pharmacies, to accept cash. Another problem is the constantly decreasing number of ATMs.
