On Friday, January 9, 2026 at 11:45 Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) recorded a record demand for power in the national power system, which amounted to 29.2 GW gross – PSE announced on Monday.

Polish Power Grids assured in a statement that despite the persistent frosts, the security of energy supplies “remains unthreatened.” “The generating units maintain availability, and according to current forecasts, the required power reserve will be maintained in the coming days,” emphasized the operator of the national power system (NES).
The company announced that January 9, 2026 at 11:45 a record high power demand in the history of the National Power System was recorded – 27.6 GW net (29.2 GW gross). She indicated that the previous highest power demand was recorded on January 9, 2024. At that time it amounted to 28.6 GW gross.
According to PSE, such high demand was mainly due to the low air temperature, down to -10°C during the day.
“The vast majority of demand was balanced thanks to the generation of domestic sources, primarily thermal ones, and the operator had an appropriate power reserve. At the time of the record, the balance of cross-border exchange was approximately 732 MW towards imports to Poland,” the company said.
She added that the production of domestic PV sources reached approximately 3.2 GW at its peak, while the production of wind farms fluctuated around 2.2 GW.
As stated in the announcement, PSE does not expect any problems with balancing the power system in the near future.
Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne is a 100% strategic company. belonging to the State Treasury. Performs the duties of the operator of the electricity transmission system. It manages the transmission system, which includes, among others: 400 and 220 kV transmission lines and over 100 highest voltage stations. (PAP)
