Dariusz Joński about Zbigniew Ziobro's asylum. He announces an intervention

Joński announced that he would submit a question to the EC on Monday. The urgent procedure means that the institution will have approximately two weeks to respond. The politician explained that Members of the European Parliament have the right to submit an application to the EC in this formula once a month.

When does Dariusz Joński plan to submit an inquiry to the European Commission?

What are the charges against Zbigniew Ziobro?

What does Dariusz Joński intend to do after the asylum intervention?

Who informed about granting asylum to Zbigniew Ziobro?

I believe that the Commission should react, because here we have the example of two politicians facing huge charges: a dozen in the case of Marcin Romanowski and 26 in the case of Zbigniew Ziobro. It cannot be that one country will be a safe haven for people who broke the law and siphoned off money, and now they are fleeing to another EU country and feeling unpunished there, said the KO MEP.

Zbigniew Ziobro with asylum in Hungary. MEPs are considering their next move

Joński also admitted that the delegation of the Civic Coalition in the European Parliament is considering bringing the issue of Budapest granting Ziobro asylum to the next meeting of the European Parliament's Petitions Committee (PETI). – We will raise this issue at the next delegation meeting, i.e. this week – said the politician.

The fact that former Minister of Justice and former Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro was granted political asylum in Hungary was announced on Monday on the X platform by one of his representatives, attorney Bartosz Lewandowski. Ziobro himself announced on Monday that he had applied for international protection for his wife, Patrycja Kotecka. Kotecka works in the European Parliament as an accredited assistant to MPs Patryk Jaki and Jacek Ozdoba.

The Hungarian delegation informed the Council of the EU, i.e. other member states, about the fact that Budapest granted political asylum to two Polish citizens on December 23. However, the names of these people were not provided in the note.

Will the Marcin Romanowski case return?

The idea for PETI to address the issue of Hungary granting asylum to PiS politicians has appeared not for the first time. At the beginning of December, on the initiative of Poland2050 MEP Michał Koboska, coordinators of political groups in the EP decided that the Petitions Committee would urgently investigate the case of former Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski, to whom Hungary also granted political asylum.

PETI was to call on the European Commission to investigate, among other things, whether Hungary has broken EU law. MEP Kobosko submitted a motion on this matter after PETI received a petition submitted by a Polish citizen. The case was publicized by Dariusz Joński. However, on the same December day, the Petitions Committee held a vote in which – with the votes of conservatives, including PiS MEPs – it rejected Romanowski's case.

At the end of December, Kobosko announced that the liberals from Renew Europe planned to renew the application. The next coordinators' meeting is scheduled for January 28 and, if the proposal receives the green light, it will probably be discussed by the committee on the same day. Joński hopes that PETI will also debate Zbigniew Ziobro at the same meeting.

— The European Commission has the tools to respond [wobec Węgier] and we will demand that it react decisively and decisively, because it is a member country, said Joński.
