The Head of the Government recalled that, in the midst of the dictatorship, the Brasov workers started a spontaneous protest that quickly turned into a large street movement against the communist regime.

“They had the extraordinary courage to say “no” to dictatorship and lies and who showed the whole world that no system, no matter how oppressive, can limit the Romanians' desire for freedom and dignity”. the Prime Minister sent, according to the Government of Romania.

According to him, the revolt of 1987 represented a “cry of despair and act of collective courage” which broke the wall of silence imposed by the totalitarian regime and opened the way to the Revolution of December 1989.

“The anti-communist uprising in Brașov remains a landmark of resistance in the face of injustice, reminding us of the duty we have, as a society, to defend and guarantee the rights and freedoms of citizens and to strengthen constitutional democracy – as a form of defense against any form of authoritarianism.”

Ilie Bolojan paid tribute to those who had the courage to face oppression in order to restore to Romanians the rights violated for decades:

“Respect for the courage with which they faced the totalitarian oppression to regain our rights and freedoms that were violated to the Romanians for several decades!”

The Prime Minister also drew attention to the current challenges. At the same time, in his message, the prime minister called for unity and civic responsibility:

“Today, in a regional context marked by security challenges, disinformation campaigns and attempts to rewrite national history, we have the moral duty to protect the historical truth and the memory of those who sacrificed themselves for freedom, to fight the falsification of our recent history that fuels nostalgia for a regime that violated human dignity, and to build together a resilient society based on democratic values.”
