Panic in the Russian capital. A giant green fireball lit up Moscow after the night of Ukrainian drone attacks

A bright green object was spotted at dawn on October 27 over Moscow and several nearby cities, sparking many questions and speculations online. The phenomenon was captured from multiple angles and shared on social media and Russian Telegram channels, where witnesses described “a huge, green ball crossing the sky.”

According to the SHOT channel, the object was seen around 6:30 in the morning, and reports came not only from the Russian capital, but also from the towns of Istra, Friazino, Ramenskoe, Liubertsi and Krasnogorsk.

The images show an intense green light moving across the sky above tall buildings, leaving a trail of sparks behind and then disappearing into the clouds.

A stunned viewer shared the moment online, racking up thousands of views.

He described seeing a “very bright” and “slow moving” meteor over the city.

His video attracted widespread attention, with many comparing the fireball to the Chelyabinsk meteorite of 2013.

Assumptions: from meteorite fragment to space debris

Several explanations have circulated on the Internet – from the hypothesis of a meteorite to a digital simulation created with the help of artificial intelligence.

The Mash channel, citing Russian experts, reported that the phenomenon could be caused by space debris or fragments of a satellite that entered the atmosphere.

According to them, the green color would be given by nickel, and the white by magnesium – materials frequently used in the construction of space equipment. Specialists also state that the low speed of the observed object does not correspond to the profile of a meteorite, but rather to that of a satellite component that disintegrates upon re-entry into the atmosphere.

The background: drone attacks on Moscow

The observations come in the context in which, on the same night, Moscow and other regions of the Russian Federation were targeted by a series of drone attacks.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that air defense systems had intercepted 193 drones, most of them over central regions, including 40 in the Moscow metropolitan area.

After the explosions, local residents near the town of Kommunarka reported plumes of black smoke visible from a distance.

Witnesses: “A very bright, slow moving light”

Several residents posted footage and comments about the phenomenon on social media. A witness described a “very bright, slow-moving ball,” cocomparing it with the meteor that fell in Chelyabinsk in 2013 – an event that caused damage and hundreds of injuries.

Although the incident so far does not appear to have caused damage, the appearance of the green sphere has raised questions about the safety of flights and the control of orbital objects re-entering the atmosphere.

Similar phenomena

The phenomenon is not isolated. In the past year, a large meteorite was observed exploding over the Yakutia region in eastern Russia at a speed of more than 5,633 kilometers per hour, turning into a white fireball.

Similar events were recently reported in the UK, where residents of London, Ealing and Wimbledon spotted a bright light crossing the sky during the night. Witnesses described a “blue-green” object about the size of a full moon that moved quickly through the clouds before disappearing.

What is known so far

The Russian authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the nature of the phenomenon.

The specialists consulted by the local press, however, believe that it is most likely a fragment of a satellite or a piece of a decommissioned rocket that partially burned up in the atmosphere.

In the absence of a confirmation, the mystery of the green sphere above Moscow remains open – a spectacular image in the sky of the capital, on a night already marked by explosions and panic.
