President Nicușor Dan told Digi24 on Thursday that he did not attend the UN General Assembly in New York because “I considered it more useful to be present in the country during this period”, but “in all sections of this conference Romania has expressed its point of view.”
The head of state said that “all the time is a calculation of opportunity” when it comes to participating in such events.
“Romania was present, it had a delegation led by the Mrs. Minister of Foreign Affairs, in all the sections of this conference Romania expressed its point of view. Obviously we consulted before the delegation left, we had an internal debate, only that, as I said, it is a calculation of opportunity,” said Nicușor Dan.
Asked why he did not consider it appropriate to go there, Nicușor Dan replied: “Presidents of other countries have been depending on some three years, some five years, some have smaller deficit problems than Romania has. To go five to six days to miss the country or to be present in the country, I considered it more useful to be present in this period.”
He offered some examples of activities he did in the country these days, saying that “some of them” were more important than participating in the UN General Assembly.
“I did a coalition session, I had some discussions with some investors who are in Romania and who have from divergences, to investment opportunities, I had a CSAT meeting, I looked on some laws that need to be promulgated or sent, that is, a president's activity,” said Nicușor Dan.
