US President Donald Trump said Monday, May 12, that he is considering participating in discussions between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled in Turkey, notes Reuters. The White House leader said that there is a chance to join the negotiations, according to his program, and stressed that he hopes “to a good result”.
“I was thinking about flying there. I don't even know where I will be on Thursday. I have so many meetings, but I was really thinking about going there,” the leader from the Jurnali White House said, during a press statement. “It's a possibility, I think, if I feel like some things can take place. But we have to take it to an end,” he added.
Donald Trump is about to make a tour in the Middle East this week, which includes visits to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
“I think a good result could be reached after the Turkish meeting between Russia and Ukraine,” the US president said.
Putin proposed direct negotiations with Ukraine on Saturday night, “without any prior condition”, negotiations that take place in Istanbul on Thursday, May 15, and which, in his opinion, should be aimed at establishing a “sustainable” peace and “eliminating the profound causes” of the war.
The proposal of the Russian President came after the great European powers, with the support of US President Donald Trump, asked the Russian leader on Saturday to accept an “unconditional” cessation in Ukraine for at least 30 days, starting Monday, May 12.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has announced, in an X message, that he accepts direct negotiations with Russia and will personally go to talk to Moscow in Istanbul, as the Kremlin leader proposed, even if his request and European leaders were not accepted to be declared in advance, starting on Monday.
