Sorin Grindeanu talks about early parliamentary elections. What scores would PSD and the other parties get now compared to 2024

The president of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, invoked on Monday the scenario of early elections, given that the current Coalition will no longer function and none of the major parties will form an alliance with the AUR. His comment comes against the background of requests from the PSD to replace Ilie Bolojan from the head of the Government, but also against the PNL's threats that he could leave the government. But what do the latest polls show?
“The PSD will decide for the PSD, not for the PNL. The PSD can decide that, yes, we go into opposition and we're done, and then it's a plausible scenario to reach the anticipated, obviously, or the PSD decides, we stay in this coalition, but with certain conditions, if you want us, those from the PSD, to continue to be partners. But the PSD will not come to decide inside the PNL what happens, or inside the USR, for that it's not our business”, Sorin Grindeanu declared on Monday.
What results did the parties register two years ago
The previous parliamentary elections took place almost 1 and a half years ago, more precisely on December 1, 2024.
Then PSD was the party that received the most votes: 21.96% in the Chamber of Deputies and 22.30% in the Senate.
AUR ranked second, with 18.01% in the Chamber and 18.30% in the Senate.
The PNL was in 3rd place, with 13.20% in the Chamber of Deputies and 14.28% in the Senate, followed by USR, with 12.40% in the Deputies and 12.26% in the Senate.
S.0.S Romania also entered Parliament, with 7.36% in the Chamber and 7.76% in the Senate, the Young People's Party (POT) – 6.46% in the Chamber and 6.39% in the Senate and UDMR – 6.33% in the Chamber of Deputies and 6.38 in the Senate.
What the polls show now: AUR has exploded, PSD would lose, PNL and USR are stagnating
The most recent INSCOP Research survey, published last week, showed that AUR is in first place in the voting intentions of Romanians who say they are sure to come to vote, with 38.6%, i.e. a double score compared to 2024.
At the same time, PSD is rated with 16.9%, i.e. with an average of 5 percent less, PNL has 13.9%, i.e. about the same score as in the elections, and USR is rated with 13.4%, i.e. slightly above what it got in the elections. The UDMR is rated below the 5% parliamentary threshold in the survey, but the Hungarian formation has never missed entering the Legislature.
POT and SOS would no longer enter Parliament.
With these percentages, the current Coalition would have practically worse results than the ones they currently have.
Early elections, almost impossible mission
In the 36 years since the Revolution, early elections have never been organized in Romania, although their scenario was circulated intensively during the mandates of the former presidents of Romania, Traian Băsescu and Klaus Iohannis. The parties in power did not reach a consensus then, and the idea was abandoned.
According to art. 89 of the Constitution, regarding the dissolution of Parliament, early parliamentary elections can be organized under the following conditions:
(1) After consulting the presidents of the two Chambers and the leaders of the parliamentary groups, the President of Romania can dissolve the Parliament, if it has not granted the vote of confidence for the formation of the Government within 60 days from the first request and only after the rejection of at least two requests for investiture.
(2) During a year, the Parliament can be dissolved only once.
(3) Parliament cannot be dissolved during the last 6 months of the Romanian President's mandate, nor during a state of mobilization, war, siege or emergency.
