Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an admirer of Donald Trump, on Friday welcomed the US president's plans to meet in Budapest with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, with whom he also has cordial relations.
“The planned meeting between the American and Russian presidents is great news for the peace-loving people of the world. We are ready!”, Viktor Orban wrote on the X network, according to News.ro.
US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had agreed with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, with whom he spoke on the phone for more than two hours, to meet in Budapest, Hungary, to see if they can end the war between Russia and Ukraine, but did not provide a specific date for their summit.
In 1994, also in Budapest, a memorandum was signed by which Ukraine was guaranteed its territorial integrity in exchange for handing over its nuclear arsenal to Moscow. The memorandum was signed by Boris Yeltsin on behalf of Russia, by Bill Clinton on behalf of the USA and by John Major on behalf of the United Kingdom, as the third guarantor nation. However, the memorandum was violated in 2014 by Moscow, with the unilateral annexation of the Crimean peninsula, then in 2022 with the launch of a large-scale invasion of the neighboring state.
