Special meeting at the UN, after the drone incident in Galati / Minister Oana Țoiu's announcement

The UN Security Council meets on Monday in a special session convened at the request of Romania after the incident in Galați, where a Russian drone struck and exploded in a block of flats.

  • The special session of the UN in New York takes place from 22.00 (Romanian time), and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Ţoiu participates.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, said that at the meeting of the UN Security Council, she will present “the flagrant violations of international law and the risks generated by these repeated actions of the Russian Federation”.

“Romania's approach aims to bring to the attention of the international community the serious consequences of the violation of Romanian airspace and the need to increase diplomatic pressure to respect international law and protect regional security. Together with its partners in the UN, Romania continues the pressure for an immediate ceasefire and a just and lasting peace in Ukraine”, wrote Oana Țoiu, on Monday evening, on Facebook.

The initial announcement regarding the meeting of the UN Security Council was made on the night of Sunday to Monday by the Romanian ambassador to the UN, Cornel Feruță, on his Facebook page.

According to the diplomat, immediately after the incident, Romania launched consultations at the UN and requested a meeting of the Security Council, based on articles 34 and 35 of the United Nations Charter, which regulates the role of the Council in situations that endanger the maintenance of international peace and security.

“Romania's request was supported by partners and allies. The intrusion of the drone and its explosion in a densely populated area as a result of which Romanian citizens were injured are serious violations of the UN Charter and international law,” wrote Feruță on Facebook.

According to him, the UN Security Council will meet on Monday, at 15.00, New York time (22.00 Romania time – no), in a special session, with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Oana Țoiu.

The drone crashed over a block of flats in Galati

A Russian drone, of the Geran-2 type, crashed on the night of Thursday to Friday, over a block of flats in Galati.

The impact was followed by an explosion and a fire in an apartment located on the 10th floor of the apartment building. Two people – a mother and her 14-year-old son – were injured, and around 70 tenants were evacuated from the building.

President Nicușor Dan urgently convened the CSAT meeting and called the crash of the Russian drone in Galati “the most serious security incident on Romanian territory since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine”.

“We had a Russian drone, Gheran-2, that left Russia. We know the trajectory, we know where it passed through Ukraine, we know where it entered Romania, part of a swarm of 43 Russian drones, of which only one reached the territory of Romania”, Nicușor Dan declared on Friday, at the end of the CSAT meeting.

Nicușor Dan also announced the closure of the Russian Consulate in Constanta, and consul Andrey Kosilin was declared persona non grata. He left the consulate today, after receiving a 72-hour deadline to leave Romania, according to local media.
