Shot of accusations from the Russian Embassy in Bucharest against Romania

The Russian Embassy in Bucharest launched a series of accusations against the Romanian authorities on Friday, following the summons of Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the decision to close the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Constanța. The diplomatic mission conveyed that Romania did not present evidence regarding the origin of the drone that crashed in Galați and warned that the measure taken by Bucharest “will be followed by response measures”.

“On May 29, 2026, the Russian Ambassador, Vladimir Lipaev, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania in the context of the crash of an unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be Russian, on a block of flats in Galati,” the Russian Embassy said in a post on Facebook.

The diplomatic mission claims that, “without any grounds”, the ambassador was informed of the decision to declare the Russian consul in Constanța persona non grata and to close the Consulate General of the Russian Federation.

The Russian Embassy conveys that the Romanian side has not provided explanations regarding the coordinates of the drone's point of entry into Romanian airspace, its trajectory, altitude and flight speed.

“Hurrying to formulate unfounded and unobjective accusations against Russia, the Romanian side, during the meeting, as in previous similar situations, was unable to answer any of the concrete questions regarding the incident,” the statement reads.

The Russian Embassy also claims that the Romanian authorities have not explained how they determined the origin of the drone, nor why it was not neutralized before the impact.

“The reasons why the Romanian Air Force, which successfully shoots down targets far beyond the country's borders, according to an already established practice, did not do anything to neutralize the drone on its own territory have not been convincingly explained,” Russian diplomats said, referring to the Romanian F-16 military plane from NATO's air police force for the Baltic countries that shot down a Ukrainian drone in Estonia this month.

“There has been a new challenge to the Kiev regime”

“All this indicates that, in reality, there has been a new provocation by the regime in Kiev, which is trying by all means to draw NATO into a war with Russia,” claims the Russian Embassy.

The diplomatic mission also states that the incident in Galati “cannot even be interpreted as a hostile action by Russia against Romania” and accuses the existence of an “anti-Russian hysteria” in the political and media space.

“Any other statements that cause the fueling of anti-Russian hysteria in the local political and media space can only be considered manipulative propaganda, intended to further complicate Russian-Romanian relations,” the Embassy said.

The Russian side warns that Romania's decision regarding the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Constanta will have consequences.

“The Romanian side was informed that its decision regarding the Consulate General of Russia in Constanța will be followed by response measures,” the message also states.

Little: “I don't know what kind of drone exploded in Romania

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday questioned whether the drone that crashed into a block of flats in Galati came from Russia and suggested it could have been a Ukrainian drone.

“I don't know what kind of drone exploded in Romania. Let them send us the remains,” Putin said, quoted by the Kyiv Post.

Romania accuses Russia of the incident. The incident in Galați in which two people were injured occurred after a Russian Geran-2 drone deviated from its route and entered Romanian territory and hit a residential block in the municipality of Galați, stated President Nicușor Dan in a press statement at the end of the CSAT meeting.

He emphasized that “the entire responsibility belongs to Russia.”
