Wet Wet

On this day the church celebrates the memory of the holy martyr Mokiya. The people called him Wet – firstly, because of the consonance with his name, and secondly, because on his holiday it often rains.

On Mokia, as on the eve, when the name day of Mother Raw Earth was celebrated, it was not customary to take on earthworks, but for a different reason. This day was considered a holiday to appease the king of the city.

They said that if you work in the field at Mokiya, hail will destroy all the crops. There was another sign: if you throw a broom out the window during a hailstorm, it will stop immediately. But if it rained on Mokiya Mokrogo, people tried to get wet under it so that their hair would gain beauty and strength.

Mokia was called the weather indicator for the whole summer. If this day is rainy or foggy, then the summer will be damp. So they said: “It’s wet in Mokea – wait for an even wetter summer.” If the sunrise is purple, then the summer will be menacing, with fires.
