Not every currant pleases with its sweetness and dense clusters. One bush produces small change already in July, another produces sour berries, the third gets sick at the first dampness. But there are proven options: productive, sweet and unpretentious, which bear fruit even under an apple tree and do not require daily care.
1. Bagheera
Black currant with large shiny berries up to 2 g. The taste is rich, sweet, with a slight tartness and a bright aroma. The yield is high, it is easy to collect 4–5 kg from a bush. Not afraid of powdery mildew and bud mites. Ideal for jam, compotes and freezing.
2. Lazy
An early variety with very large berries up to 2.5 g, almost black, with a waxy coating. The pulp is dense, sweet, without acid – even children eat from the bush. The bush is compact, there are no thorns, and it is easy to collect. Grows well in partial shade and poor soils. Suitable for jams and baby food.
3. Dobrynya
Large-fruited variety with berries up to 3 g, one of the largest among black currants. The taste is harmonious, sweet, with notes of honey. The bush is powerful, resistant to drought and disease. The berries do not crumble and hold their shape well when cooked. Ideal for winter preparation and fresh consumption.
These three varieties do not require frequent pruning or spraying. It is enough to plant the bushes at a distance of 1.5 meters, mulch the soil with straw and water once a week during drought. Already in the second year you will receive the first harvest, and from the third you will close the jars until spring.
Question and answer:
How much yield does a currant bush produce?
From 3 to 5 kg per bush with minimal care.
Why are currants small?
Due to old shoots, lack of light or thickening. These varieties produce large berries even on poor soils.
