“I don’t want to let go of the camera”: the most beautiful city in Russia has been named

There are cities where people go for recreation. And there are those where you want to stop every five minutes, because the light falls “perfectly”, the streets look like the set of a movie, and an ordinary walk turns into an endless photo shoot.

In 2026, it is St. Petersburg that is most often called the most beautiful city in Russia – and not only by tourists, but also by photographers, bloggers and travelers themselves.

A city that seems made for photographs

For several years in a row, St. Petersburg has topped the ratings of the most beautiful and most photographed cities in the country. Tourists admit: it’s difficult to put away your phone or camera here, even for an hour.

White nights, reflections in canals, ancient facades, fogs over the Neva, well-like courtyards, golden light at sunset – the city literally works as a natural movie set.

According to a study by the Cloud Mail.ru service, it was St. Petersburg that became the most photographed city in Russia, surpassing even Moscow. Most often, tourists take pictures of Palace Square, the Hermitage, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and Peterhof.

And according to a KP.RU survey, almost half of Russians called St. Petersburg the most beautiful city in the country.

The combination of imperial architecture and an almost European rhythm of life gives St. Petersburg a special atmosphere. Many tourists compare walking around the city center with traveling through Amsterdam, Vienna or Paris – only with a northern character.

Especially popular among travelers:

  • Neva embankments at dawn;
  • roofs and panoramic platforms;
  • Vasilyevsky Island;
  • Petrograd side;
  • old front doors and courtyards;
  • trams, bridges and evening lights of the center.

On social networks, St. Petersburg is most often called “a city for aesthetics,” and travel bloggers regularly include it in their selections of the most photogenic places in Russia.

Russian singer and songwriter Tosya Chaikina, in an interview with Moskvich Mag, called St. Petersburg “one of the most beautiful and strange cities in the world.”

According to the artist, this is “a city full of romance and mysticism”, which is created for walking. She also noted that when returning here as a tourist, you again understand how “magically beautiful” St. Petersburg is.

Why the trend for “visual tourism” is only growing

In 2026, travel is increasingly built around emotions and visual experiences. People choose cities where they want not only to relax, but to preserve every moment – for themselves, social networks and memory.

That is why St. Petersburg today is called not only the cultural capital, but also the main city in Russia for visual tourism.
