A court in Balakhta sentenced a 52-year-old local resident who tried to burn his former partner and her 12-year-old daughter alive.

According to the prosecutor's office, in February 2025, a man came to the house of a woman at night, with whom he had broken up a month before. Armed with gasoline and a shovel, he broke the window of the bedroom where his former partner was sleeping, doused the window sill and the bed with gasoline, and then set the room on fire.

According to the department, realizing that the woman would try to get out of the house with the child, the man also set fire to the porch and the front door, blocking the safe exit from the house.

Despite the fire and heavy smoke, the woman managed to save her daughter. She took the child out through the window of the room that the flames had not yet reached. After this, the man fled the scene without calling firefighters or providing assistance.

In court, the accused stated that he only wanted to scare his former partner.

The court found him guilty of attempted murder of two people, including a minor, committed with extreme cruelty and in a generally dangerous manner. The man was sentenced to 9 years in a maximum security colony with restriction of freedom for 1 year.
