Salary increase at Romgaz. How does the Government justify the decision

The government adopted a memorandum by which Romgaz employees will receive a 6.5% salary increase, starting on June 1. The executive justifies the decision by the need to motivate employees in the context in which the company is running this year the largest investment program in its history.

“The employees of SNGN ROMGAZ SA will benefit from a salary increase of 6.5% starting from June 1, 2026, a decision taken today by the Government, given that the company is carrying out in 2026 the largest investment program in the history of the company, of approximately 5.6 billion lei”, according to a statement sent from the Victoria Palace.

The investments for the exploitation of natural gas from the Neptun Deep perimeter, the completion of the Iernut plant and the assumed expenses of taking over the operational activity of the chemical fertilizer producer Azomureș are mentioned.

“The decision to increase salaries (…) takes into account Romgaz's strategic role in ensuring the security of Romania's natural gas supply and its contribution to the stability of the natural gas market at the national level. In this context, the need to maintain stability and motivate human resources is an essential condition for the achievement of the operational and investment objectives assumed by the company”, states the Government's press office.

The risk of migration of Romgaz personnel to competing companies is invoked, as it is a category of skills that are sought after on the labor market.

In the memorandum, it is mentioned that the wage increase at Romgaz was, in the 2021-2025 interval, below the average increase recorded in the industrial sector in Romania.

“The difference from the industry average was -1.3% in 2021, -0.2% in 2022, -4.4% in 2023, 4.2% in 2024 and increased to -9.0% in 2025. This development indicates a deterioration of the company's relative wage position in relation to the relevant labor market,” the memorandum states.

The last wage increase at Romgaz took place on May 1, 2025, the 4.4% increase being below the inflation level, which led to a real decrease in employee incomes.

Through this increase, Romgaz's personnel expenses for 2026 will increase by 40,654,000 lei, reaching 1.163 billion lei.
