Yuri Veshny, Yegoryev day
St. George the Victorious is a Christian saint, especially revered in Rus'. The Day of St. George the Victorious in Russia has become a great holiday. It is called Yuryev or Egoryev because the name Georgiy was conveyed by these names in the Russian tradition.
Active field work began on St. George's Day. People went out to serve prayer services in those fields that had been sown earlier, and sprinkled the fields with holy water.
The so-called “Yurievskaya dew” had special power. She appeared early in the morning; at this time it was necessary to go out into the meadow and roll on the grass in order to become strong and healthy. It was believed that if you drive cattle into the meadow at dawn with a willow branch, it will benefit it.
On Yegoryev's day, cattle were called birthday people. He was looked after in every possible way, cleaned, and fed better than usual. It was also forbidden to make anything from wool – even just to pick up woolen threads. They honored Yuri and the shepherds. After the cattle were driven out to the meadows, they were treated to scrambled eggs and presented with fabrics and money. The whole village had fun at this holiday.
