How much does Russia really spend on its military? “A threat to Europe”


Actual expenses Russia on army are up to two thirds higher than official data, reports the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND). According to the latest analyses, the Russian government hides some of its military costs by showing them in other budget items.

BND reports that Russia does not include all military expenditure in the defense ministry budget. Some of the funds allocated for construction, IT projects and social benefits for soldiers are settled outside the official defense budget. German intelligence also emphasizes that the Russian definition of defense spending differs from the one adopted by NATO, which makes it even more difficult to assess the actual scale of investment in the army.

BND analysis shows a systematic increase in Russia's military budget since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The head of the BND, Martin Jaeger, emphasized in October that Russia was deliberately hiding its intentions and testing the West's reactions. He warned that Europe should be prepared for further escalation of the situation, and Moscow's actions are aimed at weakening NATO, destabilizing European democracies and deepening social divisions.
