Former Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro (PiS), who is in Hungary, told PAP that he believes that “reason and love for the country, not for the EU mirage” will prevail during the Hungarian elections on Sunday. In his opinion, if Viktor Orban wins, he will block “all EU plans, which are also dangerous for Poles.”

– I believe that Hungarians, who already know what the change of power to the pro-EU Donald Tusk ended for Poles, and how quickly Poles felt “EU details” in their pockets, will not be fooled by this – said Ziobro, referring to the elections in Hungary. He added that he believed that in Hungary “common sense and love for one's own country, not for the EU mirage, will prevail.”

Ziobro said that the stakes in the Hungarian elections are “higher than ever before” in the history of the EU. According to the PiS politician, “if the pro-EU Péter Magyar (leader of the opposition Tisza party – PAP note) takes power, Brussels will have an open way to rebuild the EU into one centralized state, which is what the left-liberal elites want.” – Orban announced that if he wins the elections, he will block all these plans, which are also dangerous for Poles, he added.

According to Ziobro, for this reason some EU countries are engaging in activities on the side of the “EU pet Magyar”. As he said, Brussels “knows perfectly well” that the Hungarian Prime Minister's veto is the only thing standing in the way of the EU. – That's why he is so afraid of him and attacks him so furiously, accusing him of supporting the criminal Putin. And Orban is simply protecting Hungary's interests, he said.

As he said, if Russia prevented energy supplies to Hungary, “their economy would turn into a dark and cold desert for several years,” and its reconstruction would take about 5 years and would amount to “several tens of billions of euros.” – Orban believes that Hungary has no choice, therefore he recognizes that the Hungarian raison d'état in such a situation is the need to maintain relations with Russia – he added.

Referring to Tuesday's visit of US Vice-President JD Vance to Budapest, Ziobro said that the US administration appreciates Orban's consistency “in defending traditional values, opposition to the invasion of immigrants and the gradual liquidation of nation states in Europe.”

According to PAP information, on Sunday those identified with Ziobro's faction will appear in Budapest, including: PiS vice-president Patryk Jaki, MP Mariusz Gosek and MEP Jacek Ozdoba, who are to take part in observing the course of the elections at polling stations. On Friday, Budapest was visited by MPs Michał Wójcik, Maria Kurowska and Jan Kanthak, also associated with the former Sovereign Poland. Wójcik told PAP that politicians saw Ziobro that day.

Parliamentary elections in Hungary will be held on Sunday. In the final weeks before the vote, most independent polls showed support for Tisha at between 49 and 58 percent. among decisive voters, with support for Prime Minister Orban's Fidesz ranging between 35 and 38 percent. Opinion polls also showed growing support for the opposition while the popularity of the ruling party was declining. Polls from centers linked to the government show Fidesz's advantage, amounting to several percentage points.

At the end of November last year Minister of Justice, Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek notified the Speaker of the Sejm about the allegations against Ziobro related to his performance as the head of the Ministry of Justice and the University of Technology in 2015-2023. The prosecutor's office accuses the former Minister of Justice of, among other things, leading an organized criminal group and using his position for criminal activities. Ziobro allegedly committed 26 crimes, including: give orders to his subordinates to break the law in order to provide selected entities with subsidies from the Justice Fund, interfere in the preparation of competition offers and allow funds to be awarded to unauthorized entities.

Currently, Ziobro is granted political asylum and international protection by the Hungarian authorities, who have concluded that he is at risk of political persecution. This decision was made in December last year. Ziobro himself stated that he would remain abroad until “real guarantees of the rule of law are restored in Poland.”
