The “Eagle Column” accompanied the history of Bucharest from 1874 to 1977, when it fell during the earthquake. Then the column was broken, the plinth was found, but the eagle was nowhere to be found.

The “Eagle Column” was inaugurated in 1874, a few days after the unveiling of the statue of Mihai Viteazul in the Academy Square, today the University Square. The monument was made of Carrara marble, like the staircase of the Știrbei Palace Chapel, a work signed by Karl Storck together with the masters of Filippo Grossi's workshop.

Since the earthquake, nothing was known about the fate of the Column, the eagle or the pieces of marble that, perhaps, pave a courtyard today or ennoble the fireplace of some lovers of noble materials.

Until now, when a fragment of the city's history, seemingly forgotten by everyone, reappeared among the garages and concrete alleys.
