Trump wants to rename the Strait of Hormuz after himself – media

According to the publication's sources, the US President gives top priority to establishing control over the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently blocked by Iran.

“We will take control of the strait. This is guaranteed. They will never be able to blackmail us about this strait. You can rest assured,” said a senior US administration official.

The United States is already moving forces into the region and is considering various options: landing on islands in the strait area, blocking Iranian oil exports or increasing its military presence to protect shipping. At the same time, Washington admits that the operation is associated with serious risks and “there are no simple solutions.”

According to the source, after this the US President is considering the possibility of renaming the waterway “American Strait” or “Trump Strait”.

Trump himself publicly admitted that the strait could be named after the United States or even himself, but the White House clarified that this is still only a discussion and not an official decision.

Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative summit in Miami, the US President publicly called the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.” The broadcast was broadcast by the White House.

“They should open it, they should open the Trump Strait. I mean the Strait of Hormuz. Sorry, I'm so sorry. Terrible mistake. The fake news will say, 'He said it by accident'. No, I don't have accidents, at least not that many,” Trump said.

Context

Against the backdrop of the war between the United States and Israel with Iran, the shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important routes for the world oil trade, through which millions of barrels of crude oil and petroleum products pass every day from the Middle East to Asia, Europe and the United States. Oil prices began to grow sharply.

On March 10, information appeared in the media that Iran allegedly began mining the strait. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US Navy will escort tankers from companies that cooperate with the Americans through the Strait of Hormuz.

On March 14, US President Donald Trump called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK and other countries to send their ships to create conditions of openness and security in the Strait of Hormuz.

On March 17, White House adviser Kevin Hassett said that Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is supposedly being restored, and Iran's attempts to restrict shipping on this route have not harmed the US economy. On the same day, the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, proposed introducing a an analogue of the “grain agreement” that was concluded during the Russian-Ukrainian war.
