France banned Ukraine from renaming the village Champagne
The Ukrainian authorities planned to change “as part of decommunization” the name of the village of Nadezhdovka near Odessa, where the Champagne of Ukraine winery is located.
However, France protested: changing the name would contradict Ukraine's international obligations.
If the village could be renamed Champagne, the plant would be able to legally produce Champagne and not pay royalties.
