The man was stopped on the A9 highway, in the town of Loupian, being suspected of fraud, according to France Bleu.
According to the investigators, the Romanian hid his license plate before reaching the toll booths, so that the cameras could not record his entry onto the highway. Later, at the exit, he would call the automated system and claim to have lost the ticket, stating that he entered from the nearest station.
With this method, the driver paid the lowest possible toll every time.
The scheme was repeated no less than 144 times, with the total damage exceeding 13,000 euros.
The fraud was discovered by the anti-fraud department of Vinci Autoroutes, which alerted the gendarmes specialized in road traffic control.
The driver was intercepted after entering the motorway near Perpignan and investigations determined that the first fraudulent crossing took place in January 2024.
The man admitted his actions and was ordered to pay the full amount owed to the motorway company, as well as a fine of 1,125 euros, set by the Montpellier court.
