Mariusz Świtalski — who is he? Biography and successes of the creator of Żabka and Biedronka

Mariusz Świtalski is the head of the Elektromis company, which was powerful in the 1990s. When the company began to be prosecuted by the prosecutor's office, he founded the Biedronka and Żabka chains of stores. According to Łukasz Cieśla from Onet, the entrepreneur's former bodyguards are accused of kidnapping journalist Jarosław Ziętara in 1992. They were supposed to do this so that the journalist would not reveal the frauds of Poznań businessmen. The prosecutor's office believes that the key meeting regarding “silencing” Ziętara took place on the premises of the Elektromis company. Now Onet reports that Mariusz Świtalski demands “that the courts prohibit him from being associated with this case.”
Mariusz Świtalski is a figure who had a huge impact on the shape of Polish retail trade after 1989. His ideas changed the way Poles shop. He is the father of such successes as Biedronka, Żabka and Czerwona Torebka. As successful as he was in business, his activities were repeatedly the subject of investigations and controversies, which shows the darker side of Poland's economic transformation.

The entrepreneur initially focused on private import: the goods included, among others: Amstrad and Spectrum computers, which were unavailable in Poland at that time, but also electronics, beer and spirit. Within a few years, Świtalski transformed the company into a powerful holding company.
As reported by Forsal.pl, in 1992 an audit revealed financial irregularities in Elektromis. The prosecutor's office accused the company of, among others, failure to pay taxes and evasion of customs duties. The trial lasted for years, but Świtalski was not even accused – officially he only served as an advisor and head of the fire brigade.

After selling Elektromis, he created Eurocash, but what brought him the greatest fame was the establishment of the Biedronka chain in 1995, modeled on the German Aldi. Just three years after opening the first store, there were 243 Biedronkas across the country. Mariusz Świtalski – the owner of Elektromis – sold them to the Portuguese chain Jerónimo Martins.
First Biedronka, then Żabka. Mariusz Świtalski learned the secret to great success
Mariusz Świtalski seemed to have found a way to huge success in business. Shortly after selling Biedronka – in 1998 – he opened 7 experimental convenience stores called Żabka. The branches operated in Poznań and the surrounding area, and their popularity contributed to the development of the network.
As “Głos Wielkopolski” notes, the introduction of the franchise system contributed to the flood of Żabki, of which there were already 1,700 in operation in October 2005. Świtalski did not intend to rest on his laurels and in 2007 he sold the chain to the Czech fund Penta Investments for half a billion zlotys.

As “Głos Wielkopolski” recalls, it was said in the business community: “Świtalski is like Midas – everything he touches turns to gold.” It was expected that the next venture would repeat Żabka's success.

Świtalski focused on Czerwona Torebka shopping arcades, to which he added his other businesses, such as Małpka Express and Merlin.pl. However, the project failed to gain market recognition and went bankrupt in 2015. The sale of Małpka Express to the Forteam Investments fund led to a conflict when the new owner did not obtain the expected price upon further resale.
After selling the largest chains, Świtalski limited his media activity and invests mainly in real estate. His story is proof that even after a difficult start, you can achieve success on a national scale.
