Folk calendar
Kirill Vesnoukazchik
Saint Cyril (in the world – Constantine, nicknamed the Philosopher) is a Byzantine missionary who, together with his brother Methodius, created the first Slavic alphabet.
In Rus', Kirill was nicknamed the Spring Pointer, since spring was judged by the weather on that day. If it turned out to be good, it foreshadowed frost. And in cold weather, the first thing to do is drink hot sbiten. This drink made from honey with spices has been popular among people since ancient times. They drank sbiten several times a day and sold it on the streets and in taverns.
They also said to Kirill: “The snow settles and makes the fields thick.” This was due to the fact that the peasants tried to keep the snow cover on the fields so that, when it melted, it would saturate the soil with moisture. To do this, men went out to the future arable land and trampled the snow. On Kirill, in the southern regions, they began to transport manure to the fields.
Another name for the holiday is Babi vzbryksy. In the old days in Rus', on this day, women brought gifts to the midwives who delivered their babies.
