MTS provided communications to the important logistics center of Antarctica, Tala Bay

25 February 17:35

The MTS digital ecosystem has expanded network coverage in Antarctica. Now stable cellular communications and mobile Internet are available in the Tala Bay area, an important transport hub of the Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE). The project was implemented jointly with the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) within the framework of the 71st RAE.

The company's specialists installed a base station on Progress and built a 13-kilometer long radio relay line to the ships' mooring area in the bay. This solution made it possible to provide a signal where laying optical fiber is impossible due to glaciers and difficult terrain. Now, during seasonal work and unloading ships, researchers and engineers can make calls and use the Internet.

Communications cover not only the territory of the scientific base and the Zenit airfield, but also the wheelhouses of the scientific expedition vessels Akademik Treshnikov and Akademik Fedorov, as well as a significant part of the Stornes Peninsula, where field research is being carried out.

Progress is the main station of the Russian Antarctic Expedition in the Larsemann Hills on the shores of Prydz Bay. From here, scientists and cargo are sent to the Vostok base – the Earth's pole of cold. At the station itself, scientific work on biology, hydrology and oceanology is carried out year-round, and satellite data on the state of the ice cover is also received.

MTS has been developing a telecommunications network in Antarctica since 2020. Today the company provides communications to five year-round Russian stations: Mirny, Vostok, Progress, Novolazarevskaya and Bellingshausen.
