If, year after year, your winter garlic does not want to produce large and vigorous heads, then you are probably doing something wrong when planting. We don’t know exactly what mistakes you are making, but we suggest using one proven planting method that is used in Estonia. The author of the blog “At Grandfather Yegor’s Dacha” on the Zen platform (18+) shares the details.
So, the “Estonian” method of planting garlic before winter consists of the following principles:
- plant the heads not vertically, but tilted, at an angle of 45 degrees. This way the roots do not spread straight down, but fan out, which means they are provided with better nutrition;
- keep the distance between the cloves from 15 cm. This will allow the heads to grow actively and unhindered, so the harvest will be larger;
- Sprinkle a 1-2 cm layer of river sand at the bottom of the groove. The sand performs drainage functions, removing excess moisture and preventing the garlic from getting warm.
If everything is done correctly, then in the spring you will see friendly, powerful shoots, heads of 100 grams, clean, white, strong – these will be stored for a year without any problems.
