The project that proposed suspending the driver's license for drivers who do not pay their traffic fines was withdrawn after today's meeting of the governing coalition. According to Digi24 sources, the decision came after the initiative received a negative opinion from the Ministry of Justice, on the grounds that the provision would be unconstitutional.

The legislative initiative had been put up for public debate by the Ministry of Development and provided that drivers who did not pay their traffic fines within 90 days would automatically be without a driver's license. Basically, non-payment of traffic fines would have led directly to the suspension of the right to drive.

The measure has generated dissatisfaction among many drivers in Romania since the moment it was made public. The authorities argued at the time that the collection rate of fines was very low and that such a sanction would have led drivers to stop ignoring traffic fines in order to avoid losing their license.

In the end, the project was withdrawn, and the suspension of the license for non-payment of fines will not be introduced into the legislation, at least in the form originally proposed.
