Last weekend, a 75-year-old couple was taken to the Krasnoyarsk Regional Clinical Hospital. Both were injured at the city skating rink.
The man tried to save his wife from falling, but he couldn’t resist and injured his hand. Doctors diagnosed him with a broken finger, and his wife with a hematoma on her knee.

Despite what happened, the pensioners remained in good spirits. They told doctors that they had been skating together for many years and were not going to give up active recreation. “Age is not a reason to stay at home,” the man noted.
Hospital traumatologists reminded Krasnoyarsk residents of the rules of first aid on ice. If, after a fall, sharp pain occurs, it is impossible to lean on a limb, or swelling quickly increases, you should immediately call an ambulance. You can’t try to “tough it out” and move on – this aggravates the injury.
Before doctors arrive, it is important to provide proper assistance. The area of the bruise or fracture needs to be cooled. Snow in a plastic bag wrapped in cloth is suitable for this. Cold should be applied for 15-20 minutes. If pain is severe and a fracture is suspected, the limb must be immobilized. For the arm, you can use a magazine or cardboard as a splint, for the leg, a folded jacket. Secure the splint with a scarf or laces without over-tightening. There is no need to remove the skate from the injured leg – it serves as a fixation, but it can be unlaced if there is swelling.
It is strictly forbidden to rub or heat the injured area, try to straighten a dislocation, or tighten a limb. The task of first aid is not to treat, but to prevent complications until doctors arrive.
