Poland will launch an investigation into possible links between the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the Russian secret services, as well as any impact on Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
The recent release by the US Department of Justice of millions of internal documents on Epstein revealed the former financier's ties to many high-ranking figures in politics, finance, academia and business – both before and after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to sex crime charges.
Tusk told a government meeting in Warsaw that authorities would set up a team to investigate any potential consequences in Poland of Epstein's crimes, particularly the possible involvement of Russian intelligence.
Russia's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a written request for comment on Tusk's claims. The Russian Embassy in Warsaw also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“More and more leads, more and more information and more and more comments in the international press point to the suspicion that this unprecedented pedophilia scandal was co-organized by the Russian secret services,” Tusk said.
“I don't need to tell you how serious it is for the security of the Polish state that the increasing possibility that the Russian secret services co-organized this operation. This can only mean that they (the Russians, no) also have compromising material against many leaders who are still active today,” added the Polish prime minister.
The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated last December that the Epstein files reveal the hypocrisy of the Western elites.
“Here, as I understand it, were all the Western 'life lecturers' who looked down on Russia and who gave us lessons about 'democracy and human rights' in interesting poses, together with equally interesting entertainment partners,” said Zakharova, in a message published on Telegram.
