Folk calendar

Fedul Vetrenik

The national holiday was named in memory of the martyrs – Deacon Agathopod, reader Theodulus and others like them, who gave their lives for the faith in 303.

On this day, warm spring winds begin to blow. They say about inclement weather: “Fedul came and puffed up his lips.” Sometimes a more interesting version of the saying is used: “Fedul, why did you pout your lips? – Burnt your caftan. – How big is the hole? – Only one collar left.”

It was believed that with the first spring wind, crickets fly in and settle in gardens. Urticaria butterflies and ladybugs also appear.

On Fedula (Feodula) it was necessary to open the windows and speak to them in special words in order to protect the hut from rotten winds, from evil spirits, from commotion. However, the real reason for this custom was most likely the most mundane: after a long winter, the hut needed ventilation, and the warm wind could no longer cool the room down. It is no coincidence that they said: “Whoever opened the window before Fedul was the one who suffered from bad weather”; “I opened the window for Fedul and heated the hut without wood.”

The farmers observed: if there is snow the size of a cow left at the bottom of the ravine, it means they can start plowing.
