Folk calendar
Efimov day.
Euthymius the Great, also called Euthymius the Complacent or Euthymius the Schemamonk, lived in the 5th century. Along with Anthony, Macarius and Pachomius the Great, he is revered as a hermit – one of the pillars of desert living and the founders of monasticism.
February is the month of snowstorms. No wonder they used to say in Rus': “Blizzards and blizzards arrived in February.” Efimov's Day is no exception. “The winds blew on Efim – his hat was blown away, his caftan was taken off, his mittens fell off on their own,” people joked.
Another saying: “Get off the stove on Yefim – tell fortunes about Maslenitsa” – meant that based on the weather on that day it was possible to predict the weather on Maslenitsa. If there was a blizzard on that day, then blizzards were expected in the spring. In this case, they said: “Broom with a broom – yes to Maslenitsa.” If the sun was shining at noon, it predicted a rainy summer; and if the wind blew, then the whole year had to be damp.
We also observed the behavior of domestic animals on Efim. The attentive owner knew: if a cat scratches the floor and chickens wag their tails, expect a snowstorm.
