The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Munteanu, said, when asked about President Maia Sandu's statement that he would vote for union with Romania in a referendum on this issue, that, personally, he would also vote “for”, informs News.ro.

On the other hand, Alexandru Munteanu said that, as prime minister, he must fulfill the will of the majority of the population, which decided that the country's objective is European integration.

“I, as a personal decision, like Alexandru Munteanu, would vote 'for'. As the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, who is a manager and must fulfill the will of the majority of the Moldovan population, who decided that our objective is European integration, I will do everything in my power, within my knowledge, I will make every effort to achieve this objective. I think we are already doing everything necessary and even more. I think this is the most important for us for now”, said the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova for observatorul.md.

“If a referendum were to be held, I would vote for the union with Romania”, declared, a few days ago, the president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu in the British podcast “The Rest Is Politics”, conducted at the presidency headquarters in Chisinau.

“You see what is happening around. It is difficult for a small country like Moldova to survive, under the pressure of Russia, as a democratic and sovereign country”, said Maia Sandu, who admitted that at the moment there is no majority for the union with Romania. “However, there is a majority that supports integration into the European Union, and this is the goal we are pursuing”, Maia Sandu also said.

“It is the realistic solution that can help us survive as a democracy.”

It was the first time that the leader from Chisinau spoke directly about the fact that he would give a favorable vote in a referendum in which people would be questioned regarding the union with Romania.

The Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), led by the former pro-Russian president Igor Dodon, asked the state institutions to indict the president Maia Sandu for treason, as a result of the statements made regarding the union with Romania.

PSRM says, in a statement sent on Tuesday, that Maia Sandu's statements cannot be considered personal opinions, qualifying them as “an open act of political treason directed against the Moldovan statehood, the Constitution, the sovereignty and neutrality of the country”.

“De facto, Maia Sandu has publicly admitted that she does not consider the Republic of Moldova a value worth preserving and that she is willing to support its destruction. This represents a direct betrayal of national interests, expressed consciously, publicly and on a foreign platform”, accuse the Moldovan socialists, who are in opposition in the Chisinau parliament
