According to the proposed bill, the US President would be able to take the necessary measures to annex or acquire Greenland. He must then submit to Congress a detailed report on the changes in federal law necessary to formally admit Greenland into America as a state.
Fine stressed that Greenland is a “vital national security asset” and not a “distant outpost” that the United States can afford to ignore.
“Whoever controls Greenland controls key Arctic shipping lanes and the security architecture that protects the United States. America cannot leave this future in the hands of regimes that despise our values and seek to undermine our security,” the congressman said.
According to Fine, the law should protect US national interests, strengthen the economy and strengthen America's role in the Arctic, countering the influence of China and Russia.
“For too long, American leadership has watched our geopolitical dominance be undermined by our adversaries… My bill will protect the homeland, secure the economic future, and ensure that America, not China or Russia, makes the rules in the Arctic. This is what American leadership and strength looks like,” Fine said.
