US President Donald Trump maintained his desire to annex Greenland in an interview with The Atlantic magazine on Sunday. He reiterated that the US “absolutely needs” Greenland.

In this way, Trump referred in the interview to fears that after carrying out his threats against Venezuela, he would also follow through on his repeated announcements about joining the island to the US. The magazine's journalist asked him about the words of Secretary of State Mark Rubia, who noted on Saturday that the attack on Venezuela shows that “if (Trump) says he will do something (…) these are not empty words.”
The US president replied that it was up to others to interpret these words.
– I really don't know. Marco complimented me very much yesterday. You know, I wasn't referring to Greenland at the time. But we need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense, Trump said, adding that the island was “surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.”
The authorities of Denmark and Greenland are raising concerns about the US operation in Venezuela due to Trump's earlier announcements about the need to take over Greenland. At the end of December, the American president appointed Jeff Landry as the US special envoy for Greenland. The politician wrote on social media that his task would be to “incorporate Greenland into the USA.”

Denmark's ambassador to the US, Jesper Moeller Soerensen, called on Sunday for full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark. Earlier, Katie Miller, wife of President Donald Trump's advisor, published a map of Greenland covered with an American flag on the X platform.
“A reminder regarding the United States and the Kingdom of Denmark: we are close allies and should continue to cooperate in this capacity,” Moeller Soerensen wrote on X. “We expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” he added.
Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark form the Commonwealth of Denmark. The government in Copenhagen is responsible for the security of Greenland.
Kate Miller, wife of Trump advisor Stephen Miller, titled a map of Greenland covered with an American flag: “COMING SOON.” The entry appeared after the American military captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife during an operation in Caracas.

Miller's entry was criticized by Christian Friis Bach, chairman of Denmark's parliamentary defense committee, emphasizing that Greenland, unlike Venezuela, is a well-functioning democratic country. In turn, Greenland's Finance Minister and former Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute B. Egede wrote on X: “Our country is not something that can simply be taken away. We will continue to fight.”
Miller was previously a spokeswoman for President Donald Trump's and later dismantled Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk.
