The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has launched consultations on its creation temporary ceasefire zone in the area of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine occupied by Russian troops. As IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced on Friday, these actions are a reaction to the destruction of one of the two high-voltage lines supplying the facility.

Grossi said that the IAEA is in talks with both the Ukrainian and Russian authorities about establishing an enabling zone safely carrying out repairs to the energy infrastructure and reducing the risk of a nuclear disaster in the conditions of intensified military operations in the vicinity of the power plant.
According to the head of the IAEA the proposed zone could cover an area within a radius of approximately 10 km from the electrical switchboard located near the coal-fired heat and power plantwhich is also under Russian occupation.

Although all six reactors of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant – the largest installation of this type in Europe – have been shut down since 2024, their cores still require constant water coolingwhich makes the security of the facility dependent on stable electricity supplies.

The IAEA recalled that On December 30, thanks to the local ceasefire negotiated under its auspices, the necessary repairs to the power plant's power network were carried out for the third time in recent months..
