Folk calendar

Sign

On this day, a holiday is celebrated in honor of one of the most revered images in Orthodoxy – the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, called the “Sign”. It depicts the image of the Mother of God with her hands raised in prayer and the image of the Baby on her chest.

In Rus' they always expected something special from the Sign; they hoped to see signs indicating fate, or at least signs of the weather. People carefully looked into the starry sky, observed the flight of birds and the behavior of animals, followed the clouds, listened to the wind… They also said that if at the dawn of this holiday you stand facing the north wind, it will take away all your troubles and sorrows.

By the time of the Sign, all the fish had to bury themselves in the pools and prepare for the winter, so fishing at this time was considered futile. Life was going on in the forests: the moose were losing their old antlers.

On this day the memory of Saint Roman was also celebrated. They prayed to him for deliverance from infertility. The fact is that this monk, who had the gift of miracles, helped many women give birth to children in his time.
