Russian actress Yana Troyanova was sentenced in absentia to 8 years in a penal colony by a court in Moscow, which found her guilty of “inciting hatred” and “justifying terrorism.”

The criminal case against Troyanova was initiated because of an interview she gave at the end of last year to the Novaya Gazeta Yevropa portal, which is published outside the reach of Putin's censorship. She said, among other things:
Of course, we deserve it if someone shouts in our faces: “Russians must be killed, even children.” Or as Ukrainians say, “A good Russian is a dead Russian.”
The court agreed with the investigators' opinion that the actress expressed hatred towards Russians and called for the overthrow of the government using violence.
The lawyer of Trojanova, who has been living in France since 2023, said in court that she did not agree with the allegations because in the interview she only expressed her personal opinion and did not call for violence. (PAP)
