Many gardeners store the best seeds until spring in hopes of getting a new harvest. But the storage process often brings surprises: bags of precious grains develop mold and a damp smell, and such seeds have to be thrown away.
This problem happens if there is high humidity in the storage area. But there is a simple way that will help keep the seeds dry and alive for many years.
To prevent mold, it is enough to organize storage correctly.
What to do
- Take an airtight plastic container or a tight box with a lid.
- Place bags of seeds there and add a few bags of silica gel – the same balls that are usually found in boxes with shoes, bags or equipment.
- Silica gel will absorb excess moisture and create an ideal dry microclimate inside the container.
- The optimal places for storing seeds are dark, dry and cool, where the temperature is stable all year round. A pantry, closet away from heating appliances, the bottom shelf of a refrigerator, or a dry, ventilated basement will do. Avoid places with temperature changes and dampness.
With this method, the seeds will not become moldy, will not lose their germination capacity, and will be ready for planting even after several seasons. And your future harvest will always be under reliable protection
