I forgot about “baths” and dryers: now I dry my shoes overnight – and they don’t stink, don’t shrink or become deformed

In autumn, shoes get wet almost every day. You can’t dry it on a radiator: the skin cracks, the glue comes off, and a musty smell appears inside. But there is a simple way that dries shoes evenly, from the inside and without damaging the material.

What you will need:

Newspaper or paper towels
Coarse salt – 2 tbsp. spoons
Dry cloth or old T-shirt

How to do:

  • Blot the shoes outside and inside with a dry cloth to remove excess moisture.
  • Pour 1 tbsp into each shoe. spoon of salt. Salt will absorb moisture and neutralize odor.
  • Crumple newspaper or paper towels and stuff them tightly inside the shoes. The paper absorbs moisture, but the shape remains the same.
  • Leave to dry in a warm, ventilated place, but not near the radiator, but, for example, at the front door or in the kitchen.
  • After 4–6 hours, replace the paper with fresh paper.
  • In the morning, remove the salt and paper. The shoes will be dry, odorless and deformable.

Paper absorbs moisture from the inside, salt removes dampness and bacteria, and the absence of direct heat preserves the glue and material. This method is suitable for sneakers, leather boots, suede and even children's shoes.

Question and answer:

How to dry wet sneakers overnight without smelling?
Stuff the shoes with crumpled newspaper or paper towels and add 1 tablespoon of coarse salt inside. The salt will absorb moisture and neutralize bacteria, and the paper will retain its shape and speed up drying.

Why can't you dry your shoes on a radiator?
Direct heat deforms the sole, dries out leather and suede, destroys glue and causes cracks. This leaves moisture inside, which causes a musty smell.
