Between September 19 and 21, the leader of S1500-the size of a basketball and high building as a 13-storey-became the first turbine of its type that generated a megawatt during a test flight in a desert area in the Xinjiang region, in western China, writes South China Morning Post.

The tests included the assembly in desert conditions, pressure checks, as well as the launch and recovery in strong wind conditions, both day and night.

“All the planned objectives were achieved”announced the company SAWES ENERGY TECHNOLOGY, based in Beijing, one of the main developers of the project.

Dun Tianru, the general manager and chief designer of the company, called the realization “an essential step towards the practical use of the product”.

He said that additional tests will follow in different regions and mediums in China, and the series production is scheduled for 2026, the first units to be connected to the network in the same year.

Unlike traditional wind turbines, which rise from the ground like huge windmills, the aepurted turbines float in helium -filled carcas that raise the generators in the atmosphere, the energy being transmitted back to the ground through resistant cables.
