US President Donald Trump said on Monday that there is a connection between the use of the popular analgesic drug without a prescription Tylenol, based on Paracetamol, and the development of autism during pregnancy, a statement challenged by many doctors, writes Reuters.
Trump suggested, on the other hand, leukorine, a form of folic acid, as a treatment for the symptoms of autism, during an event organized at the White House.
The administration for food and medicines (FDA) has published a notification in the federal register just before the American leader's speech, approving a version of the drug produced by the GSK pharmaceutical company he had retired.
The FDA approved the drug for a condition associated with autism.
The FDA has quoted an analysis of the use of leukorine in 40 patients with a rare metabolic disorder called cerebral folate deficiency, which can lead to a number of neurological symptoms, some of them being observed in people with autism.
The FDA will inform doctors that the use of Tylenol during pregnancy can be associated with a very high risk of autism, said Trump, without presenting evidence for this statement.
“It's not good to take Tylenol. I say it. It's not good,” he said. “You should not give the child Tylenol every time he receives an injection,” he added.
The researchers say that there is no solid evidence to indicate a connection between the use of tylenol and autism.
They say that leukorine, used to treat cancer patients, patients who do chemotherapy, has been promising in small clinical studies, but that large clinical studies are still needed.
Tylenol is produced by Kenvue, which has been detached from the pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson in 2023, and generic versions of acetaminophen are also available.
