The Romanian Cup for men's basketball, close to the start! What does the “sixteenth” of the competition look and what is its format

The “sadness” of the Romanian Cup for men's basketball will start on Tuesday, September 23, with the duel between CSM Târgu Mureș and SCM Timișoara. Eight bands are fighting for qualification in the finals of the competition, and four of them will finally advance 8, which will take place in February 2026, in Oradea.

On September 16 and 19, in a preliminary tour, CSM Târgu Jiu defeated CSU ASE Bucharest (98-58, on their own ground, and 102-49, away) and qualified in the “sixteenth” of the Romanian Cup, the 2025-2026 edition.

This phase will start on Tuesday, September 23, with the tour of the dispute between CSM Târgu Mureș and SCM Timișoara. Until Saturday, September 28, 3 of the 4 duels in the “sixteenth” will find out their winner, following the clash between CSM Galați and CSU Sibiu to take place at the end of October, respectively November.

CSA Steaua București Vs. CSM Petrolul Ploiești

  • Tour – September 24, 7:00 pm, in Bucharest

  • Return – September 28, in Ploiești

CSM Galati vs. CSU Sibiu

  • Tour – October 27, at Galați

  • Return – November 13, in Sibiu

In the finals of the Romanian Cup, the 4 winners will be added the bands that have finished the 2024-2025 edition of the National Men's Basketball League on 5-8 places. The confrontations in this phase will be played on December 17-23.

The winners of the finals will obtain the tickets for the end of the Romanian Cup, which will take place, for the second year, in Oradea, in February 2026. The qualified teams are already the champion of U-BT Cluj-Napoca, Vice-Campioana CSM CSU Oradea, Bronze medalist CS Vâlcea 1924 and CSO Voluntari, the winner of the previous edition of the Romanian Cup.
